To desire God is to want to know Him and delight in Him.
“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
Desire God for the Lord is beautiful
Psalm 16:11 says: “In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever”. God is the best and He has the best for you. No one and nothing can be compared with Him. God is the source of wisdom, joy, beauty, fun, power, love, goodness, creativity, and much more. He is the source of every good (James 1:17).
We should seek God for who He is, not just for His benefits. Imagine the most wonderful person you know or admire. God is much more wonderful than that person. He is the Creator of that person. So all the attributes you admire in that person originated with God. Can you imagine what God is like, knowing that He has all these wonderful characteristics and is the source of all goodness?
“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4)
“Then I will go to the altar of God,
To God my exceeding joy;
And on the harp I will praise You,
O God, my God.” (Psalm 43:4)
How to desire God and enjoy Him
We need to spend time with God and enjoy Him. As we strengthen our relationship with God, He will help us with everything else (Matthew 6:33). So make sure to spend time with Jesus by praying and reading the Bible every day. Ask God to reveal Himself to you and help you know Him more.
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
Eternal life is knowing God and experiencing all His goodness. It is enjoying God, desiring Him and His love, and loving Him back.
So make God your top priority and love Him foremost. Christianity is not about religious rule-following, but about having a relationship with “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) and doing His good will.
You may have many prayer requests and needs personally. “Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:32-33). So first seek God and as you learn to be faithful to Him, all that you need will be given to you as well.
Dig deeper in desiring God, learn to worship God and keep away from idols.
